Heather Demir, LMSW, BCD
Heather is a clinical social worker and school social worker with 15 years of experience working with bicultural families, Third-Culture Kids (TCKs) and Adult Third Culture Kids (ATCKs), military members, immigrants, and displaced persons. Heather has a strong interest in issues stemming from childhood adversity, bicultural and cross-cultural challenges, issues of identity, challenges experienced by Neurodivergent clients, and challenges facing new and transitioning parents. She uses an integrative approach to meet the needs of her clients, and has specialized post-graduate training in the clinical applications of attachment science, Interpersonal Neurobiology, Polyvagal Theory, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, Synergetic Play Therapy, and various Cognitive Therapies. Heather works with a range of clients, including those experiencing adjustment difficulties, relationship issues, trauma, anxiety, depression, addiction, eating disorders, ADHD, and grief. She works therapeutically with clients globally through her online practice, and, in person at an international primary school in Istanbul with children, parents, and school staff to support children with special needs. As a social worker who is also part of a local expat network, Heather supports this community by organizing family-oriented social events and fundraising for charities.
My Story
Heather received a Masters in Social Work from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, is licensed to practice psychotherapy through the ASWB in the State of Michigan, is a Board Certified Diplomat in Clinical Social Work, and holds an provisional educator license in pupil services. She has worked with a number of transient clients and families in her clinical practice over the last 15 years, to include veterans and military, refugees and other displaced persons, immigrants, international students, and expats. Heather is trained in Prolonged Exposure (PE) Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy, evidence-based interventions for trauma, and is a Certified Trauma Professional through Evergreen Certifications. She has worked with parents and is certified through Attachment Parenting International to lead parent groups and the Neufeld Institute to provide parent education and support in the early years. Heather completed a post-graduate certificate program through the University of Wisconsin-Madison in School Social Work, with special emphasis on developmental needs during the ages of 5-12, is a Certified ADHD and Autism Professional through Evergreen Certifications, and has completed training in the Zones of Regulation Program. Heather is a life-long learner, and has received training throughout her career in additional therapies which she also draws from in her work, including Interpersonal Neurobiology, the clinical applications of Attachment Science and Polyvagal Theory, the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP), and a number of cognitive therapies including CBT, ACT, and DBT. She is currently engaged in a foundational play therapy training program with the Synergetic Play Therapy Institute. Heather runs a global online private practice and works at a local international school, but is also active in her community by managing this group and providing psychoeducational classes and presentations to the expat population. She lives between Turkey, UAE, and USA.
