Be Present. Be Intentional.
Be the Best You Possible.
My name is Heather Demir, and I am a licensed clinical social worker from the USA living abroad in Istanbul, Turkey. As a psychotherapist here, I work with clients from many backgrounds and cultures, and in many different stages of life. I am solution-focused in my approach, and draw from research in attachment, family systems theory, interpersonal neurobiology, polyvagal theory, mindful/aware/conscious parenting and living, as well as training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy to help my clients. I am also a mother of two young children and understand the challenges that can occur while parenting. For this reason, I have devoted much of my time to helping other parents through therapy, coaching, as well as the creation of two free parenting groups. When I am not working, you can find me reading, running, dancing, practicing yoga, and engaging in fun activities with my children.

I started my career in education, as a coordinator of international education at the University of Michigan, a private English tutor for Japanese expats living in Michigan, and an instructor of Japanese Culture and History. Four years later, inspired by my work with the Japanese expat families, I sought out a career with a helping focus; so, I went back to school for social work, focusing on mental health in an interpersonal context. My graduate education and internships helped me develop therapeutic and community-building skills that have since been widened with continuing practice, and deepened my knowledge of the challenges faced by certain populations. Following graduation, I worked as a therapist and case manager for the Post-Traumatic Stress Clinic at the VA Medical Center (VAMC) in Detroit, MI, and later moved onto a multidisciplinary mental health treatment team. My time with the VAMC introduced me to veterans suffering from diverse mental health conditions, including mental illness, substance abuse, and personality disorders often stemming from childhood trauma.
After becoming a parent, my interest shifted primarily to developmental psychology, early learning theory, mindful parenting, and learning practical parenting skills based on evidence-based practice. When my son was just over one year old, my husband accepted a job transfer to Istanbul, Turkey, where I have been able to focus and expand upon these interests. Now, six years later, I have been a leader in the expat parenting community, organizing events and parties; have worked both voluntarily and as a clinician with a number of mothers and families; started an Attachment-Based Parenting Group, which has expanded to include parents in both virtual and in-person platforms; started a Facebook Page to communicate to my followers regarding individual and child mental health; completed a teachers training through Kidding Around Yoga to introduce yoga to my children, as well as those in our neighborhood; and, following COVID-19, organized a virtual support group, sharing parenting tips and resources regarding parenting during the crisis.
